Of all the sports Mario has tried over the years, horse racing may be the biggest surprise, and it is one of the best reasons to play Mario Sports Superstars. Saddle up as Yoshi or Bowser, gallop around the track, use star dashes to break away and stay close to the pack to benefit from the herd. Between races, a stable mode lets you care for your horse and kit it out with accessories. Nothing else in the Mario sports catalog plays quite like it.
Camelot and Bandai Namco Studios shared development of this five-sport collection, and the soccer is the other big surprise. Rather than a small-sided arcade game, it is eleven-a-side, with formations, squad customization and set pieces such as corners and throw-ins, while team captains can unleash special shots. Tennis and golf come from Camelot's long experience with the Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series, the golf borrowing its interface from Mario Golf: World Tour, and baseball rounds things out as a lighter, quick-hit diversion.
Each sport can be played as an exhibition or as a ranked championship, and winning championships opens up more stadiums and courses. Sixteen characters are available from the start with more to unlock, and their stats change from sport to sport, so Waluigi might be a menace on the soccer pitch and a liability on the fairway. The game also works with a dedicated line of Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards, which can unlock souped-up star versions of characters. Its online play has ended with the 3DS network, but local multiplayer is still there to enjoy.
Not every sport is equally deep, but the package is broad, the controls are friendly and the horse racing in particular has no equivalent elsewhere in the series. It is a one-cartridge tour of five very different Mario sports games.
