Item Description

Sega and Nintendo spent the early '90s fighting over every living room, so there is still a little thrill in seeing Mario and Sonic line up in the same starting blocks. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is the fifth outing for the rivals' official Olympic series, developed by Sega and set in a sunny, carnival-colored take on Rio de Janeiro, and the Wii U version brings it to the big screen in HD.

The event list leans into team play and party-friendly competition. Football and beach volleyball are fast, readable and great with a group on the couch, BMX and rhythmic gymnastics add timing-based variety, and track and field covers the quick-fire button contests the series grew up on. Rugby Sevens makes its series debut here, mirroring the real 2016 Games, where rugby returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1924, and Duel versions of football, rugby sevens and beach volleyball add head-to-head variations. The supporting cast widens too, with guests such as Rosalina, Diddy Kong, Nabbit and Jet the Hawk, though on Wii U each guest is limited to a single event.

It is a light, arcade-minded sports game rather than a deep simulation, and reviews treated it that way: fun in short bursts and at its best with friends, thinner as a solo experience. Where it shines is the crossover itself, watching Bowser square off against Knuckles, or Peach and Amy on opposite sides of a volleyball net, with each character's personality worked into their animations and celebrations.

As the last Mario & Sonic game on the Wii U and a time capsule of the Rio Games, it is an easy pick for a household that wants a colorful sports night on the couch, or for a Nintendo-meets-Sega shelf that follows the old rivalry through every Olympic year.
