Item Description

Twenty years of Mario Party, boiled down to the good parts. That is the promise of The Top 100, and it is a smart one, because what people remember most about the series is not the board-game luck but the minigames: the frantic, friendship-testing contests that turned Nintendo 64 living rooms into shouting matches. NDcube gathered one hundred of them from across the first ten home console entries and rebuilt them for the 3DS.

The selection spans the series' whole history. The Nintendo 64 years are well represented with favorites like Bumper Balls from the original game and Eatsa Pizza from Mario Party 3, the GameCube era brings standouts such as Mario Speedwagons, and the list runs all the way to Badminton Bash from Mario Party 10. Only part of the lineup is open from the start, and the rest unlock as you play, which gives the collection a satisfying sense of progression.

There is more to do than flip through a menu. Minigame Island is a single-player journey across an island map, where you pick your path and beat computer rivals to push forward. Minigame Match offers a short board for players who still want dice rolls, and Championship Battles and Decathlon turn a run of minigames into a proper contest. Every mode supports up to four players locally, and Download Play lets friends join in from a single game card.

Arriving late in the 3DS's life, The Top 100 works as a greatest-hits album for the franchise. It is the quickest way to play classic Nintendo 64 and GameCube minigames on a handheld, and a perfect fit for the friend who always skipped straight to the minigames anyway.
