Five boards, one hundred minigames and almost no filler: Mario Party Superstars plays like a greatest-hits album for a series that has had its share of experimental detours. NDCube went back to the Nintendo 64 era for its boards and pulled its minigames from across the series' home console history, and the result is the most purely fun Mario Party in years.
The boards are faithfully rebuilt classics. Yoshi's Tropical Island and Peach's Birthday Cake return from the original Mario Party, the latter letting players spend coins to plant Piranha Plants that steal Stars from whoever lands on them. Space Land brings back the dreaded countdown to the Bowser Coin Beam, Woody Woods shuffles its paths as players pass, and Horror Land swings between day and night to change what is waiting at every turn. Each one looks sharp in HD while keeping the layouts and chaos that made them famous.
The minigames are just as carefully chosen, from quick button-mashers to tense reflex tests and team battles, and they all run on standard button controls rather than motion gimmicks, so they're easy to teach and quick to start. If you only want the minigames, Mt. Mushroom lets you jump straight into cups and challenges without a full board game.
Superstars works because it trusts what made Mario Party great in the first place: Stars, coins, wild luck and the friendships tested by a well-timed steal. Up to four players can join in, and for anyone who has fond memories of crowding around an N64 for a session of Peach's Birthday Cake, this collection brings that feeling back without the blisters.
