Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

A star that appears only once every thousand years drops from the sky, and naturally everyone wants it. The Millennium Star responds by whisking Mario and company into a giant toy box, where only the one who collects seven Star Stamps will earn its blessing. It is a fittingly grand setup for Mario Party 3, Hudson Soft's final Nintendo 64 entry and the biggest of the three by a wide margin.

The headline additions are two new rivals. Waluigi and Daisy joined the playable cast here for the first time in the series, bringing the roster to eight alongside Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Wario and Donkey Kong. Battle Royale is the classic four-player board mode, with coins traded for Stars across boards such as Chilly Waters, Deep Bloober Sea, Spiny Desert, Woody Woods and Creepy Cavern, and game length can be set anywhere from a quick 10 turns to a marathon 50. Around seventy brand-new minigames fill the gaps between turns, and Game Guy's gambling minigames dare players to risk everything they have.

Duel mode is the wild card, and the reason many fans single this one out. Two players face off on dedicated duel maps, each backed by up to two hired partners like Chain Chomps that attack the other side and whittle down their stamina. Partners demand a salary every turn and walk off the job if you cannot pay, so a duel becomes a tug-of-war between offense and your coin purse, and the first to drain the other's stamina, or the one standing strongest after 20 turns, takes the win. Story mode turns the whole package into a solo campaign: one player hunts the seven Star Stamps against computer rivals, earning S-to-C rankings and a shot at the hidden Game Guy Room.

Reviews in 2001 were mixed, and the game arrived in North America late in the console's life, but its reputation has climbed steadily since; IGN ranked it the best Mario Party of them all in 2015. It was also the first in the series with multiple save slots, a small convenience that says a lot about how much this cartridge expects you to keep coming back to it.

About the game

Mario Party 3 is the third and final Mario Party title for the Nintendo 64. A total of eight characters are available to choose from: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, and newcomers Waluigi and Princess Daisy. Mario Party 3 features duel maps, in which two players try to lower each other's stamina to zero using non-playable characters such as Chain Chomps. It is the first Mario Party game to feature Luigi's main voice and also it is last Mario game where Princess Daisy appears in a yellow and white dress, and with long hair, as well as the last Mario game (until New Super Mario Bros. Wii) in which Yoshi's "record-scratching" voice is used. It is also the first Mario Party game to have multiple save slots.
