Item Description

The world of Concordia has been scattered across a vast sea, and Mario and Luigi are sailing it on Shipshape Island, a home base that is part ship, part island and launches the brothers out of a cannon toward whatever lies on the horizon. From tropical rainforests to bustling cities, every island they reach is a new chapter, with new friends like Connie and Snoutlet (who is definitely not a pig) and familiar faces including Peach and Bowser turning up along the way.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership marks the return of Nintendo's comedy RPG series after nearly a decade away. AlphaDream, which created the series with Superstar Saga in 2003, closed in 2019, and this time Acquire took the helm, bringing the brothers into a bright, cel-shaded 3D look that keeps the slapstick animation the series is famous for. The pair still move and fight as a duo, using Bros. Moves to clear obstacles in the field and timing-based Bros. Attacks in battle.

The turn-based combat keeps the series' signature hook: every attack, dodge and counter is a test of timing, so battles stay active rather than passive. Brothership adds Battle Plugs, equippable effects you can mix and swap to change how the brothers fight, and Luigi Logic, flashes of inspiration in which Luigi, for once, comes up with the clever idea that cracks a puzzle or turns a fight around. Seeing the younger brother finally get to be the smart one is one of the game's quiet pleasures.

It's a long, generous adventure with plenty of side islands to explore, and it's the first new Mario & Luigi game since Paper Jam in 2015. For players who grew up on Superstar Saga or Bowser's Inside Story, Brothership is a welcome reunion and proof that the series' blend of jokes and button-timing combat still works beautifully on a big screen.
