The menu between races is gone. Mario Kart World, the Nintendo Switch 2 launch title, stitches its courses into one connected open world, so the road out of one track becomes the route to the next and the drive between them is part of the race. It is the biggest structural change the series has ever made, and it turns a familiar formula into something that feels new again. As the first all-new Mario Kart since Mario Kart 8 debuted on Wii U in 2014, it carries more than a decade of pent-up ideas, and you can feel the team's appetite to rethink everything.

Grand prix races now hold 24 racers, and the new Knockout Tour mode leans hard into that chaos: a single marathon run across linked courses with eliminations at every checkpoint, until only a few drivers are left fighting for first. Free Roam lets you explore the world at your own pace, hunting collectibles and taking on small challenges scattered across the map. On the track, the move set has grown with rail grinding, wall riding and racing straight across water, so the best lines often run along a guardrail or up the side of a building.

The roster has never been stranger or more fun, mixing Mario, Peach, Bowser and the usual favorites with unexpected additions, the playable Cow chief among them, and picking up Dash Food changes characters into new outfits mid-race. Courses range from the city streets of Crown City to the sweep of Peach Stadium and DK Spaceport, and split-screen keeps the series' local multiplayer tradition alive on a single console.

Every Nintendo generation has had its defining Mario Kart, and World is the one that sets the tone for Switch 2: a racer built to show off the hardware, with enough depth in Knockout Tour and enough secrets in the open world to keep a group of friends arguing over the controller for years.
