Item Description

Twelve racers jammed onto the starting grid at Luigi Circuit, a red shell already hunting down whoever grabbed the early lead, and somebody on the couch shouting about a Lightning bolt: that is Mario Kart Wii in a sentence. The sixth main entry in Nintendo's kart series took a formula everyone knew and made the pack bigger, louder and much harder to escape, and for a whole generation of players it is the Mario Kart that defined the Wii years.

The headline changes show up the moment the lights go green. Fields grew from eight racers to twelve, and motorbikes joined the karts as an entirely new vehicle class, able to pop a wheelie on the straights for extra speed at the risk of getting bumped off line. Hit a ramp or a half-pipe lip, flick the controller, and you pull off a trick for a quick boost, which turns every jump into a small skill check. Tilt-steering with the Wii Remote was the big pitch, designed around the Wii Wheel shell, but the game also plays with a Remote and Nunchuk, a Classic Controller or a GameCube controller. Newcomers can switch on automatic drifting, while manual drifting still earns the mini-turbos that win races, and new items like the Mega Mushroom, the POW Block and the Thunder Cloud made life in the middle of the pack more dangerous than ever.

The 32 courses split evenly between new tracks and retro favorites. Coconut Mall sends you up escalators and past cars cruising the parking lot, Maple Treeway winds through autumn branches patrolled by giant Wigglers, Moonview Highway throws you into oncoming traffic, Grumble Volcano crumbles away under your tires, and Rainbow Road closes things out the way it should. The retro cups reach back across the whole series, from SNES Ghost Valley 2 and N64 Sherbet Land to GCN DK Mountain and DS Delfino Square. Battle mode turns team-based with Balloon Battle and the new Coin Runners, and you can even race as your own Mii.

Online play through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was a huge part of the game's identity in 2008, and that official service has long since been shut down, but four-player split screen, the Grand Prix cups, Time Trials and the battle arenas all live right on the disc. Mario Kart Wii went on to become one of the best-selling games ever released, and its time-trial community, where Funky Kong on the Flame Runner became the combination to beat, kept studying these tracks for years. This is the Mario Kart to reach for when you want bikes, tricks and twelve-racer chaos on the console that made motion steering a household idea.

About the game

Mario Kart Wii is a multiplayer-oriented racing game for the Wii, and the sixth main installment in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart Wii retains the traditional item-based weaponry familiar with the franchise, where players can select a Mario franchise driver and themed vehicles. As with most racing games, the overarching goal is to place first among other competitors, through the usage of such items and taking the fastest routes to secure the leads. Several new key elements introduced to Mario Kart Wii include increasing the number of racers to 12 racers from 8 racers from previous entries in the series, as well as introducing a new type of vehicle to the franchise: bikes. The game takes advantage of features unique to the Wii, most notably its motion control capabilities. A Wii Wheel is included in most Mario Kart Wii packages, though the game is still compatible with other controllers. Game modes are also present such as the traditional Grand Prix, Versus, Battle, and Time Trial modes.
