Two racers, one kart, and a running argument over who gets to hold the red shell. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! builds the whole game around that idea. Every kart carries a driver up front and a partner riding on the back, and a single button press swaps them mid-race. The rider in back is the one throwing items, so a smart swap lets you bank a shell or a banana for later while your new passenger grabs something fresh from the next item box. It sounds like a small twist, but it changes how every race plays: you are always managing two items, two personalities and one very crowded kart.
The pairings are where the strategy lives, because each character has a special item only they can pull from an item box. Mario and Luigi throw fireballs, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong drop a Giant Banana that splinters into smaller peels when someone hits it, Bowser and Bowser Jr. launch a massive Bowser Shell, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi turn loose a Chain Chomp that drags them through the pack, and Yoshi and Birdo throw eggs that burst open into more items. Characters come in light, medium and heavy classes, and the heavier partner decides which karts the team can drive, so every pairing is a trade-off between speed, handling and the special you want in your back pocket. Unlock Petey Piranha and King Boo and you get a pair that can draw anyone's special.
Nintendo packed sixteen courses into four cups, and plenty of them are still favorites: the frantic seven-lap oval of Baby Park, the traffic-choked streets of Mushroom City, DK Mountain's barrel-cannon launch up the side of a volcano, the towering ramps of Wario Colosseum, and a Rainbow Road that closes out the Special Cup. Two friends can share one kart, one steering and one handling items, which turns every lap into a negotiation. Battle mode brings Balloon Battle, Shine Thief and Bob-omb Blast, and the GameCube's Broadband Adapter let groups link several consoles over a LAN for races with up to sixteen players.
No later Mario Kart brought the two-rider system back, which gives Double Dash a feel no other entry can match. It is the GameCube's Mario Kart, built for a living room full of controllers, and the one to reach for when you want strategy stacked on top of the chaos: who sits up front, which special you are saving, and exactly when to swap.
The Mushroom Kingdom just got a whole lot more hectic as Mario and friends double up for furious kart racing. This time around, each kart holds two racers that can switch places at any time, so choose from a huge cast of favorites and pair them up any way you see fit. The character in front handles the driving duties, while the character in the rear doles out damage with six normal items and eight special items that only specific characters can use. Get ready for some intense multiplayer mayhem with your favorite characters, including Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Peach, Bowser, and Koopa.
