The first time your wheels fold flat, glow blue and carry you straight up a wall, Mario Kart 8 makes its case. Nintendo built this 2014 Wii U entry around anti-gravity racing: tracks twist overhead, corkscrew through the air and climb vertical walls, and bumping into a rival or a bumper while riding those magnetic strips earns a burst of speed instead of knocking you off your line. Add the hang-gliders and underwater driving carried over from Mario Kart 7, and each course becomes a three-dimensional ribbon rather than a flat loop.
There are 32 courses, half of them brand new and half rebuilt from earlier games, and the new ones are full of personality. Mount Wario is one continuous run down the mountain instead of three laps, Sunshine Airport sends you racing past parked jets, Electrodrome pulses like a nightclub, and the closing Rainbow Road is a gleaming anti-gravity spiral high above the planet. The retro picks get the same care, with the Nintendo 64 Rainbow Road returning as one long lap of the original. The item box gained new tricks too: the Boomerang Flower, the chomping Piranha Plant, the Crazy Eight and the Super Horn, the first item that can blast away a Spiny Shell. The roster also brought the seven Koopalings into Mario Kart as playable racers for the first time.
On the Wii U, Nintendo leaned hard into presentation. The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second in solo play, the soundtrack was recorded with live musicians and swings from jazz to funk to big-band brass, and the GamePad keeps a course map and a horn button in your hands or lets one player race off the TV entirely. Four-player split screen makes it a couch game first, and Mario Kart TV replays your races as editable highlight reels. During the console's life, two downloadable packs added Link, the Villager, Isabelle and tracks such as Hyrule Circuit and Mute City, and a free update introduced 200cc.
Mario Kart 8 became the best-selling game on the Wii U, and its design was strong enough that Nintendo carried it to the Switch as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which went on to top that system's charts as well. The original keeps its own character: racers hold a single item at a time, and Battle Mode is fought on the race courses themselves, quirks that Deluxe later changed. This is where that racer began, and the way to play it as it debuted on Nintendo's own hardware, single item slot, GamePad map and all.
Mario Kart 8 is a kart racing game in which players control characters from the Mario universe and other Nintendo franchises. Racers compete on themed tracks using power-ups found in item boxes to gain advantages or hinder opponents. The game introduces anti-gravity sections where players drive on walls and ceilings, gaining speed boosts from collisions. It supports up to twelve players online, four locally on one system, and features modes including Grand Prix racing and arena-based battles. Vehicle customization allows players to mix kart bodies, wheels, and gliders. The Nintendo Switch version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, includes all previous downloadable content, a revamped battle mode with dedicated arenas, and accessibility features for newer players.
