Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Somewhere on the last lap, with first place in sight, a winged blue shell comes screaming down the track and ends the dream. That cruel little projectile made its debut in Mario Kart 64, and it explains everything about what Nintendo set out to build here: a racer where nobody is ever safe and nobody is ever completely out of it. The team at Nintendo EAD took the flat Mode 7 tracks of Super Mario Kart, rebuilt them as full 3D courses with hills, jumps and banked turns, and opened the starting grid to four players on one screen for the first time in the series.
Eight racers fill the roster: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario and Bowser, split between light karts that leap off the line and heavyweights that hold their top speed and shove smaller rivals aside. Sixteen courses across the Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special Cups give each one plenty of room to shine, from the sun-baked shortcuts of Koopa Troopa Beach and the cow-dotted laps of Moo Moo Farm to the oncoming traffic of Toad's Turnpike, the haunted planks of Banshee Boardwalk and the endless neon ribbon of Rainbow Road. Power slides with a well-timed mini-turbo, bananas and shells dragged behind your kart as a shield, and the deceptive Fake Item Box all reward drivers who think a corner ahead.
Grand Prix runs at 50cc, 100cc and 150cc, and taking gold in every cup at 150cc unlocks Mirror mode. Time Trials let you chase your own ghost, and ghost data could be saved to a Controller Pak, which helped feed a record-chasing community that is still trimming hundredths of a second off these courses today. Then there is Battle mode: four arenas, Big Donut, Block Fort, Double Deck and Skyscraper, where everyone starts with three balloons and the last kart floating wins. Countless friendships have survived Block Fort, if only barely.
Mario Kart 64 ranks among the best-selling games the console ever had, and Nintendo kept it on store shelves for years, including through its Player's Choice reissue line. Later Mario Kart entries keep reviving its tracks as retro courses, which says plenty about how well they were designed, but this is where they were born. Four controllers, one screen and the original Spiny Shell is still the purest version of the series' couch chaos.
Mario Kart 64 is the second main installment of the Mario Kart series. It is the first game in the series to use three-dimensional graphics, however, the characters and items in this game are still two-dimensional, pre-rendered sprites. The game offers two camera angles and three engine sizes: 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. Each kart has distinctive handling, acceleration and top speed capabilities. Shells that you fire at rival racers, Bananas that make them skid out and Lightning Bolts that make them small and very slow are just a few of the game's unique power-ups.
