There is something deeply satisfying about watching a well-struck drive sail over a Chain Chomp parked in a bunker. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour sends Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom crew out onto the links, and it balances real golf strategy with just enough Nintendo mischief to keep every round lively.

Camelot, the studio behind the Nintendo 64 Mario Golf and the Mario Tennis games, built Toadstool Tour around a clean, readable swing. You choose a club, set your direction and distance, then press to stop a marker on the power meter and add spin as the ball takes flight. Auto shots keep things friendly, while manual shots trade safety for control. Each of the 16 characters has stats that shape how high the ball flies and how much the wind pushes it around, so picking a golfer is a strategic choice rather than a cosmetic one.

Seven courses climb from gentle resort-style layouts to wild Mushroom Kingdom designs. Peach's Castle Grounds tucks Chain Chomps into its bunkers and Warp Pipes onto the course, and later rounds bring lava pits and Thwomps that cost you a stroke. Tournament mode chases trophies course by course, while Character Match lets you beat computer rivals to upgrade them into powerful Star characters. With up to four players there is stroke play, match play and Doubles, where partners alternate shots, plus side games like Ring Attack, which threads shots through floating rings, and Coin Attack, a race to scoop up coins on the course.

Reviewers praised the visuals, sound, course variety and multiplayer, GameSpot named it the best GameCube game of July 2003, and it sold more than a million copies in North America. It also links with Mario Golf: Advance Tour on the Game Boy Advance, letting characters train on one system and carry their experience to the other. And it holds a quiet distinction: between the Nintendo 64 original and 2021's Mario Golf: Super Rush on Switch, this was the series' only home-console outing, which makes it the place to tee up the Mushroom Kingdom on a big screen with three friends.
