Before he ever set foot in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario worked the pipes. Mario Bros. is the game where Nintendo made him a plumber, introduced his brother Luigi, and sent the pair underground to deal with the pests pouring out of the sewer pipes.

The trick is that you cannot simply stomp the enemies. You hit the platform from below to flip them over, then run up and kick them away before they recover. Shellcreepers go over with a single bump, Sidesteppers need two and get angry after the first, and Fighter Flies hop around, so you have to time your hit for the moment they land. Fireballs bounce through the stage to keep you moving, and the POW block can flip everything on the floor at once if you save it for the right moment. Bonus rounds send you racing for coins against the clock.

Then there is the second player. Mario Bros. is built for two at once, and it is one of the earliest great couch games because it lets you cooperate or sabotage in equal measure. You can work together to clear a phase, or bump the platform under your brother just as he reaches an enemy, and the game turns into a friendly feud in seconds. Its ideas kept coming back, from the battle mode of Super Mario Bros. 3 to the Mario Bros. game included with the Super Mario Advance series.

This NES version, Nintendo's own port of the 1983 arcade game with an added difficulty setting, became the basis for many later re-releases. Collectors also pay attention to how the cartridge was built: the earliest NES Game Paks were held together with five screws before Nintendo moved to three screws and plastic tabs, so a 5-screw Mario Bros. is a piece of the console's first production years in North America.
