Item Description

Princess Peach opens her mouth, and explosives come out. That is the setup of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and it tells you everything about the game's sense of humor. The witch Cackletta and her unforgettable henchman Fawful have stolen Peach's voice and left explosive vocabulary in its place, so the brothers chase them across the border into the Beanbean Kingdom, with Bowser, of all people, tagging along for part of the ride.

The big idea is that you control both brothers at once. Mario answers to the A button and Luigi to B, and out in the world they jump, hammer and team up to solve puzzles neither could manage alone. In battle, that same two-button rhythm drives everything: well-timed presses add damage to attacks, and reading an enemy's wind-up lets you jump or hammer at the right instant to dodge or counter. Even on defense you're never idle, watching for the tell that shows which brother is about to be targeted. Bros. Attacks chain the pair into flashy combination moves, and new field abilities, like Mario's fiery Firebrand and Luigi's electric Thunderhand, keep opening fresh paths through the map.

Developer AlphaDream filled the Beanbean Kingdom with personality, from the royal court of Queen Bean and Prince Peasley to Chucklehuck Woods and Woohoo Hooniversity, and the writing is consistently laugh-out-loud funny. Luigi finally gets a starring role full of slapstick and quiet heroism, and Fawful's gloriously mangled English ("I have fury!") turned him into a cult favorite. Yoko Shimomura's score is bright and bouncy, and minigames like Border Jump and Mystery Carts break up the questing with quick tests of timing.

Superstar Saga launched the Mario & Luigi series that continued with Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story, and it was later remade for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo even tucked the classic Mario Bros. arcade game onto the cartridge as a bonus mode. Few handheld RPGs are this purely joyful to play from start to finish, and this Game Boy Advance original is where the brothers' double act was born.
