Item Description

Few games carry the kind of cultural weight, and outright infamy, that Manhunt 2 does. Published by Rockstar Games in 2007, with the Wii version developed by Rockstar Toronto, it became one of the most controversial games of its era. The ESRB first gave it an Adults Only rating, and because the console makers would not allow Adults Only games on their systems, it could not be released until an edited version was rated M. In the UK the BBFC rejected it twice, and it arrived there only in 2008 after a long appeals battle, while Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Korea banned it outright. The Wii version holds a strange and fascinating place in that history: a brutal stealth-horror game played through motion controls.

You play as Daniel Lamb, an amnesiac patient who escapes the Dixmor Asylum for the Criminally Insane during a storm alongside the mysterious Leo Kasper. What follows is a dark, oppressive journey through a world that feels genuinely threatening, from the asylum to a red-light district, a Project-owned nightclub and a Project laboratory in the fictional city of Cottonmouth, as Daniel, once a scientist, pieces together the Pickman Project experiment that erased his memory. The tone owes a clear debt to psychological horror cinema, and the narrative is more layered than the controversy ever gave it credit for.

What makes the Wii version distinctive is how the motion controls turn the game's execution system into something you physically perform rather than simply press: a forward flick of the Remote to stab, a sideways sweep for other kills, while hiding in the shadows means holding the pointer steady inside an on-screen circle to control Daniel's breathing. It is an uncomfortable experience by design, and that discomfort is the point. Rockstar built the game to provoke a reaction and make players confront what they are doing on screen, and the Wii hardware pulls that intention into sharp focus.

Whether it reads as genuinely unsettling or as a fascinating design artifact, there is nothing else quite like it: a game whose fight over classification became nearly as famous as the game itself.

About the game

An experiment at a secret research facility has gone catastrophically wrong. Daniel Lamb and Leo Kasper are the only surviving subjects. The Pickman Project will stop at nothing to hunt them down and stop the truth from getting out. Demented screams echo around the dank asylum that has caged you for the last six years. You open your eyes. A white-coated body slumps to the floor through your shaking hands. A bloody syringe slips from your arm. Waves of confusion and paranoia crash over you. You have no idea who you are or how you got here. The door to your cell is open. One choice. One chance. They took your life. Time to take it back.
