Item Description

Magneton was one of the sixteen holographic rares that made opening a Base Set pack in 1999 feel like a lottery ticket. Numbered 9/102, it sits in the holo block at the front of the set list, where the Charizards and Blastoises get the headlines but every slot helped define what a great pull felt like.

Keiji Kinebuchi's artwork shows the three linked Magnemite crackling with electricity against the holofoil, and the Pokédex text tells how Magneton tends to appear when sunspots flare up. As a 60 HP Stage 1 Lightning Pokémon, it carries Thunder Wave, which does 30 damage with a coin flip to Paralyze, and Selfdestruct, which hits the Defending Pokémon for 80, does 20 damage to every Benched Pokémon on both sides, and deals 80 damage to Magneton itself. That explosive, everybody-gets-hurt attack is a perfect snapshot of the wild early rules of the game.

This is the Base Set holo rare Magneton, 9/102, illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi, in holofoil. A strong addition to a Base Set holo run, and a reminder of how it all began.
