Mickey Mouse racing across town in a coin rally, settling every roadside challenge with a game of Tetris, is about as delightfully odd as a puzzle premise gets, and it is the reason Capcom's Magical Tetris Challenge has such a warm following on the Game Boy Color. This is not a straight port of the Nintendo 64 game. The handheld version was rebuilt around its own Quest Mode, in which Mickey, Minnie, Donald or Goofy earn coins by beating rival characters (and even buildings) at Tetris, each opponent playing a little differently, while racing to reach the rally station first.

The variety of rules is what keeps it fresh. Magical Tetris sends oversized, oddly shaped pieces your way that force you to rethink every stack, and Updown Tetris pushes rows up from below the longer you take to clear your lines. Beyond those, the Game Boy Color adds variants of its own: Signal Tetris, Towering Tetris and a puzzle mode in which you clear acorn, lightning-bolt and flame Target Blocks with a preset run of pieces. Your rival's board stays hidden, so a flashing laser at the edge of the screen shows how high their stack has climbed, turning every match into a tense race against an opponent you can't quite see.

Capcom's Disney games of this era carry a real polish, and this one is no exception: expressive character art, bright colors that make full use of the hardware, and a chiptune soundtrack that reworks themes from the console version alongside new tracks. There is a reward for sticking with it, too, since finishing Quest Mode four times unlocks Pete himself as a playable character across every mode. If standard Tetris has started to feel worn in, few handheld twists on the formula carry this much Disney charm.
