The first thing you notice in Madden NFL 25 is the hitting. EA Orlando rebuilt tackling around BOOM Tech, a physics-based system that weighs each player's size, speed, momentum and ratings at the moment of contact rather than reaching for a canned animation. A linebacker meeting a running back square in the hole plays out differently from a safety arriving late from the side, and ball carriers can brace for contact, stumble and fight to recover their balance depending on how they were hit. Football games live and die on how collisions feel, and this is the year Madden's started to feel heavier.
The overhaul reaches into the controls. The Hit Stick was reworked so that timing and approach angle decide whether a big shot lands, and a well-placed one raises the odds of jarring the ball loose. Ball carriers picked up hundreds of new jukes, spins and hesitations, plus a setup mechanic that lets you hold sprint and work the right stick to chain moves together in the open field. Even kicking was rethought, with a new meter that splits power and accuracy into separate reads. Much of this carried over from College Football 25, EA's return to the college game that same summer, and reviewers pointed to the on-field action as the year's clearest step forward.
The broadcast booth got its biggest shake-up in years. Mike Tirico and Greg Olsen, and the pairing of Kate Scott and Brock Huard, join returning duo Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis, the first new commentary teams the series had added in eight years. Crowd audio recorded at Monday Night Football games and hundreds of fresh on-field sound samples, from pad collisions to grunts, give every snap a louder, rougher edge. Critics were split on how far the modes had moved from the previous year, but Franchise was singled out as the strongest part of the package, and it is where dedicated players will spend their seasons.
The name carries a little history, too. This is the second game called Madden NFL 25: the first, in 2013, celebrated the series' 25th anniversary with Barry Sanders on the cover. The 2024 edition put 49ers star Christian McCaffrey out front, the first running back to headline a Madden since that earlier namesake, a fitting choice for a game so focused on contact and the run game. On Series X it captures the 2024 NFL season at the moment the series started taking its physics seriously.
