In 2008 EA Sports rebuilt its Wii lineup under a new banner, All-Play, with a simple pitch: one game that could welcome a first-timer holding a single Wii Remote and still hand a lifelong Madden player the full playbook. Madden NFL 09 All-Play carried that idea onto the gridiron, and it does it more cleverly than the label suggests.

Pick the All-Play controls and the game handles player movement for you, lighting receivers green when they are open and red when they are covered, so anyone in the room can make a smart read and fire the ball. Switch to the standard Wii Remote and Nunchuk scheme and the game gets physical: pass strength follows the speed of your arm, and a shake of the Remote triggers power moves. The standout is Call Your Shots, which lets you pick a receiver and draw his route right on the screen before the snap, the feature reviewers singled out as the best idea in the package. Score a touchdown and you can even dance around the living room for an on-field celebration and a stat boost, which is exactly as silly as it sounds.

Beyond exhibition games there is a franchise mode, a Superstar mode that follows a created rookie through his career, and a five-on-five schoolyard mini-game with big-headed players on a small field where the first team to five touchdowns wins. John Madden and Al Michaels call the action from the booth, a pairing longtime fans will recognize, and the game was also built with online play on EA's servers in its day.

The release marked twenty years of the Madden series, and the All-Play branding captures a specific moment when EA was trying to make sports games for the whole Wii audience rather than porting a controller layout. It is a neat snapshot of that anniversary season and of the Wii's motion-control football era.
