Item Description

Most football games let you run behind your blockers. Madden NFL 07 lets you be one. Its headline feature, Lead Blocker Control, has you pick a running play, cycle through your linemen, tight ends and receivers before the snap, and take direct control of the blocker you choose. You open the hole yourself, then switch to the halfback and hit it with no computer assistance. When it works, a simple off-tackle run feels like a play you designed.

Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander, fresh off his 2005 MVP season, is on the cover, which suits a year so focused on the ground game. Franchise mode returns with its roster management and player development, and the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions include The Tony Bruno Show, the in-game sports talk radio segments that ran through your Franchise season and give the off-field side of the season a voice. EA Tiburon's team had years of refinement behind this generation of Madden by 2006, and it shows in how complete the package feels.

Reviewers agreed, and the PlayStation 2 release on the same last-generation foundation was the best-selling game in the United States that year. The Wii got its own motion-controlled version, but the GameCube edition is the one built for a traditional controller.

It is a strong late-era Madden for Nintendo's purple box, with the 2006 rosters, Tony Bruno on the radio and a running game that still feels hands-on.
