Item Description
The 2002 NFL season was a year of change: the Houston Texans arrived as the league's 32nd team, and the NFL reorganized into the eight four-team divisions it still uses today. Madden NFL 2003 on the Game Boy Advance captured that new-look league in your pocket, with all 32 teams sorted into their new divisions and rosters and stats drawn from that season.
Budcat Creations built this handheld edition for EA Sports on the foundation of the previous year's GBA game, then layered on more to do. Exhibition, Season and Playoff modes cover the basics, and a new create-a-player option sets your rookie's ratings through position-based mini-games: a throwing drill for quarterbacks, a catching drill for receivers and a sprint for running backs. Player trades let you reshape a roster, the playbook was refreshed, and link-cable support opened the door to multiplayer games with up to four players. Picking a play from the call screen and watching it unfold on that small screen still captures the push and pull of Madden's playcalling.
This was the Marshall Faulk cover year, the season the Rams star fronted the series, and the cartridge is a neat snapshot of early-2000s football. For a Texans fan who wants the franchise's very first season in a game, or a collector working through the Madden line one year at a time, it's a fun stop on the GBA.
