Item Description

The first thing you notice in Madden NFL 2003 is the music. This was the debut of EA Trax, the licensed rock and hip-hop soundtrack that plays through the menus and flashes song titles on screen, and it set the tone for how EA Sports games would sound for years afterward. Marshall Faulk, the reigning three-time Offensive Player of the Year, is on the cover.

The broadcast got a makeover too. Al Michaels replaced Pat Summerall on play-by-play alongside John Madden, with Melissa Stark reporting from the sidelines. The bigger additions are Madden Mini-Camp, a set of objective-based drills across three skill levels that unlock game situations and Madden Cards, and Football 101, where Madden himself breaks down offensive and defensive schemes and lets you try the plays. For anyone who has ever wanted to understand what a Cover 2 is actually doing, it is a surprisingly good teacher. Franchise, Season and split-screen exhibition games fill out the rest.

Online play was a PlayStation 2 feature this year, so the GameCube edition was built for the couch, with head-to-head split-screen on Nintendo's controller. It was also the first Madden to reflect the NFL's 2002 realignment into eight four-team divisions, and the 2002 rosters capture the Houston Texans' first real season and the Raiders and Buccaneers teams that would meet in Super Bowl XXXVII.

If your favorite Madden memories come with a soundtrack, this is the entry where that started, and Mini-Camp is the practice mode that turns drills into something you actually want to replay.
