Item Description

Every new console needs a football game on the shelf from the first week, and for the GameCube that game was Madden NFL 2002. It was there for the system's North American launch in November 2001, with Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper on the cover and EA Tiburon bringing the series' full feature set to Nintendo's new hardware.

The rosters are a snapshot of the 2001 NFL: Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk running the Rams' Greatest Show on Turf, Culpepper throwing deep to Randy Moss, and the Ravens' ferocious defense fresh off a Super Bowl title. Season, Tournament and Franchise modes are all here, along with Create-a-Player, Create-a-Team, the Two-Minute Drill and Madden Cards to collect. The standout extra is the brand-new Houston Texans, already on the field as the league's 32nd team a full season before they played a real down.

In the booth, Pat Summerall and John Madden call the action in what turned out to be their final year together in the series, before Al Michaels took over play-by-play in Madden 2003. That pairing is pure early-2000s Sunday afternoon for anyone who grew up with it. It reviewed strongly on every platform it reached, and it set the bar for football on Nintendo's new console from day one.

It is the first Madden ever released on GameCube, and a time capsule of the league just before the Texans arrived and the divisions were realigned. Split-screen head-to-head on the GameCube controller keeps it a great pick for two friends who want to settle the 2001 season their own way.
