Item Description
Marty the zebra turns ten and decides the Central Park Zoo is too small for him, and DreamWorks' Madagascar spins that restlessness into a full-blown escape. Vicarious Visions' 2005 Game Boy Advance version, published by Activision, is a side-scrolling platformer built around a simple, clever idea: no single animal can get through a level alone, so you switch between the crew on the fly and lean on each one's talents.
Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo each bring talents the others lack, and the levels are built so that you need every one of them, swapping animals as each new obstacle demands. Skipper, the penguins' deadpan commander, turns up too, and the film's sense of mischief runs through the whole adventure. Long levels follow the gang's misadventures from the zoo to the island, with rats, crabs, birds and guards standing in the way.
A forgiving pace makes it an approachable game for younger players, and the character swapping gives it a little more puzzle-solving than many movie tie-ins of the era. For a family that still has "I Like to Move It" stuck in its collective head, it's a cheerful way to spend more time with Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria on the GBA.
