Item Description

Alex has grown up in the sleepy village of Burg in the shadow of a legend. The great Dragonmaster Dyne came from this same little town, and Alex wants nothing more than to follow in his footsteps. With his childhood friend Luna, the wisecracking winged critter Nall and the fortune-hunting Ramus at his side, he sets out to find the dragons of the world, and that small-town dream grows into an epic about destiny, love and the Magic Emperor Ghaleon, a villain with a long and personal history with the Dragonmaster legend.

Developed by Game Arts with Studio Alex, Lunar was built from the ground up to show what CD storage could do for a role-playing game. Animated cutscenes punctuate the big story beats, characters speak with real voices, and Noriyuki Iwadare's score, streaming from disc, gives the adventure a sweeping, cinematic warmth. Luna's singing is woven into the story itself, and the moments built around it are among the most remembered scenes on the system.

The battles are turn-based but positional. Your party moves around the battlefield, so distance, range and who gets cornered all matter, and choosing between attacking, casting or repositioning adds a layer of tactics that set Lunar apart from the menu-driven RPGs of its day. Along the way the party grows with characters like the arrogant young magician Nash and the gentle Mia, and towns such as the magic city of Vane give the world a lived-in personality.

Then there is the localization. Working Designs brought Lunar to North America with a script full of humor and personality, and that style made the company a legend among RPG fans of the era. Lunar became the defining RPG of the Sega CD, led to the sequel Lunar: Eternal Blue, and was later remade as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, but this is where Alex's journey started, with the original cutscenes, the original voice cast and the original Iwadare soundtrack in the format it was written for.
