Item Description

A thousand years after Alex and Luna's adventure, the legends of the first Lunar have hardened into religion, and Hiro would rather dig through ancient ruins than listen to anyone's rules. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue begins when he finds a strange girl named Lucia inside the Blue Spire, and with his tiny winged companion Ruby in tow, he is soon pursued by Leo, the zealous White Knight of Althena, while dark forces work to bring the god Zophar back into the world.

Game Arts first told this story on the Sega CD in 1994, and Eternal Blue Complete rebuilt it for the Saturn in Japan and then the PlayStation, which Working Designs brought to North America in 2000. Random encounters are gone, replaced by enemies you can see coming; dungeons were reworked, with some cut and new ones added; the art was redrawn at higher resolution with many monsters and bosses redesigned; and the anime cutscenes were extended, spilling the game across multiple discs. After the credits roll, an optional epilogue adventure continues the story for players who are not ready to say goodbye.

The cast is the heart of it: Ronfar, a priest with a gambling habit; Jean, a traveling dancer with a hidden talent for martial arts; Lemina Ausa, the money-minded heir to Vane's struggling Magic Guild; and eventually Leo himself, whose arc is one of the most satisfying in the series. Battles are turn-based but positional, with fighters moving across the field to reach their targets, so lineup and range matter more than in a typical menu RPG. Noriyuki Iwadare's music gives the journey its warmth and its swell, from bustling towns to the final confrontation.

Working Designs' localization is part of the appeal, playful and joke-heavy with a full English voice cast, and unmistakably of its moment. Some players argue Eternal Blue surpasses Silver Star Story; others consider the two a perfectly matched pair. Either way, this is the second half of the Lunar saga in its fullest form, and the PlayStation version is the one that brought Hiro, Lucia and Ruby's story to North American players with all of its animation and voice work intact.
