Somewhere around the moment The Chemical Brothers' “Hey Boy Hey Girl” kicks in and the Timeline starts sweeping across the grid in time with the beat, Lumines: Electronic Symphony stops feeling like a puzzle game and starts feeling like a club night in your hands. Q Entertainment's music-puzzle series began on the PSP, and this Vita entry, produced by James Mielke, brings it back to a Sony handheld with a soundtrack drawn from three decades of electronic music.
The idea is elegantly simple. Two-by-two blocks in two colors fall into the well, and you rotate and drop them to form same-colored squares, which the Timeline erases as it passes. Each skin changes the visuals, the sounds your moves make and the song itself, and because the Timeline moves with the tempo, a slow track lets the grid fill dangerously while a fast one rewards quick, clean building. Electronic Symphony adds the Chain block, which links matching colors for the Timeline to wipe away, and the Shuffle block, which scrambles a cluster's colors and can rescue or ruin a setup in an instant.
The Vita hardware is woven in. Blocks can be moved by touch as well as with buttons, and a new avatar system gives each unlocked character one single-player and one versus ability, powered through the rear touchpad. An experience system unlocks skins and avatars as you play, and the modes cover Voyage's long run through the skins with difficulty that rises and falls in waves, Master's five escalating zones, Stopwatch sprints from 30 seconds to five minutes, local Duel, and Playlist, where you order your favorite skins and loop them as long as you like.
The tracklist is the real treasure: Underworld, LCD Soundsystem, Orbital, 808 State's “Pacific 707,” Air's “Kelly Watch the Stars,” Aphex Twin's “Windowlicker,” Goldfrapp, Faithless, the Pet Shop Boys and Kaskade's “4 AM” among 34 songs. Reviewers rewarded it with an 83 on Metacritic, and it is easy to hear why. Few puzzle games make clearing a board feel this musical, and on the Vita it is the series at its most hypnotic.
Lumines Electronic Symphony uses the new features of the PlayStation Vita such as the touch pad on the back, while keeping classic controls already known in the first Lumines on the front. Lumines Electronic Symphony now uses animated 3D blocks instead of 2D sprites. The game will use the front touch screen controls to move and rotate blocks but will also support analog and D-pad controls. In previous Lumines titles, a player unlocked skins based on their ability to successfully reach that skin. However, in Lumines Electronic Symphony, an experience point system has been integrated. Now all the points that a player receives in a session are converted into XP, so as the player levels up, additional skins and avatars will be unlocked. Each avatar has a single player and multiplayer ability mapped to them. Players unlock more avatars and find the abilities that best suit their style of play. Q Entertainment enlisted the design firm, BUILD (which was founded by former Designers Republic and Psygnosis members), to create much of the game's marketing materials, such as the new logo, in-game font, and graphic elements for the package design.
