Item Description

Creeping down a dark hallway behind a trembling flashlight, Luigi hums along to the music to keep his nerve, and that one detail tells you everything about Luigi's Mansion. Nintendo's GameCube adventure swaps Mario's confident heroics for nervous comedy and spooky atmosphere, giving Mario's younger brother his first starring role in a haunted house he never asked for.

Luigi has won a mansion in a contest he never entered, and Mario, who went ahead of him, has vanished. The eccentric Professor E. Gadd equips him with the Poltergust 3000, a ghost-catching vacuum, and the Game Boy Horror, a handheld gadget for maps and clues. Capturing a ghost is wonderfully physical: stun it with the flashlight, latch on with the vacuum, then pull the control stick against its escape attempts while its health counts down. Every catch plays like a tug-of-war, and every one feels earned.

The mansion's rooms hide portrait ghosts, each a small puzzle with its own personality: the husband-and-wife pair Neville and Lydia, the baby Chauncey, the fortune teller Madame Clairvoya, and Boolossus, a giant Boo that bursts into smaller ones. Elemental medals let Luigi suck up and blast fire, water and ice to solve puzzles, fifty Boos lurk around the house waiting to be found, and every room is stuffed with coins, bills and gems. The trail leads to King Boo, who has trapped Mario inside a painting, and at the end the treasure you have gathered decides what kind of house Luigi builds, a neat reason to play it again.

Japanese players met it first. Known there as Luigi Mansion, Hideki Konno's game launched alongside the GameCube itself in Japan on September 14, 2001, two months before its North American debut, and it showed off the new hardware with dynamic lighting and curtains that billow toward the vacuum. That makes the Japanese edition a piece of the console's opening day and a natural pickup for import collectors. Compact as it is, the game grew into a whole series, from Dark Moon on the 3DS to Luigi's Mansion 3 on the Switch, and this is where Luigi first became a leading man.

About the game

Luigi steps out from the shadow of his brother Mario and into the gloomy shadows of a very haunted house in this, his first-ever starring role. When Luigi learns that he's the proud new owner of a creepy old mansion, he's thrilled. Of course, his feelings immediately shift when his brother, the storied Mario, disappears from the house. Now, you'll have to help Luigi track his brother down, making your way through expansive 3D levels. Each stage is packed with ghosts and ghouls to put you on edge; and you'll be armed with a flashlight and a vacuum cleaner to help you capture your foes. Armed with a flashlight and a customized vacuum cleaner, Luigi must rid the mansion of Boos and ghouls -- and find his missing brother to boot!
