Item Description

While Frodo is still days away from the Prancing Pony, another company is already gathering in Bree with a very different errand. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North follows three original heroes, the Dúnedain ranger Eradan, the elf loremaster Andriel and the dwarf champion Farin, as they hunt Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean sent by Sauron to lay waste to the northern lands while the famous battles play out in Rohan and Gondor. It is a smart premise: a story that runs alongside the one you know, crossing paths with Aragorn in Bree and with Gandalf and Elrond in Rivendell, then striking off into corners of Middle-earth the films never visited.

Snowblind Studios, the team behind Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath, built the game for a party of three. Up to three players could share the campaign online, two can team up on one PlayStation 3 in split-screen, and the AI steps in to fill any empty slot. Each hero has three skill trees to invest in, mixing melee combos, ranged attacks and spells, so the ranger's bow, the loremaster's staff and the dwarf's axe each play like a different game. When things get desperate, you can call down Beleram, a Great Eagle of the Misty Mountains, as a fourth ally who tears into the enemy from above.

Holding both the book and film licenses let Snowblind reach deeper into the lore than most Tolkien games. Elrond's sons Elladan and Elrohir turn up in the ruins of Fornost, the haunted Barrow-downs and the bleak Ettenmoors become battlegrounds, and the journey takes in orc-infested Mount Gundabad and the dwarf-hold of Nordinbad before ending at the fortress of Carn Dûm in Angmar. It was also the first Lord of the Rings game rated M, and the combat leans into that, with orcs and trolls meeting a far bloodier end than anything in the movies.

Reviews were mixed on release, and the game got lost in a crowded autumn of 2011, which is exactly why it has picked up a quiet following since. Its pleasures are simple and sturdy: a couch partner, a loot-filled road north and a side of the War of the Ring that nobody else has told. As a two-player Middle-earth adventure on the PS3, there is nothing else quite like it.
