Item Description

What if a second fellowship had been walking a few steps behind the first? The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age answers that question with an original party whose quest shadows Frodo's across the whole War of the Ring, crossing paths with Gandalf, Aragorn, Éowyn, Faramir and Gothmog along the way. Developed by EA Redwood Shores and released in 2004, it is the rare Lord of the Rings game built as a traditional party-based RPG rather than an action brawler.

The heroes are new to Middle-earth. Berethor is Captain of the Citadel Guard of Gondor, Idrial an elf in Galadriel's service who wields water magic and keeps the party healed, Elegost a Dúnedain ranger and archer, Hadhod a stubborn dwarf, Morwen a lady of Rohan searching for the family she lost to Saruman's raids, and Eaoden a member of Théoden's Royal Guard. Each brings a different set of strengths, and their abilities grow the more you use them, so the party develops around how you actually fight.

Battles are turn-based in the classic Final Fantasy mold, which made The Third Age a natural fit for players raised on Japanese RPGs who also loved Tolkien. The journey runs through Moria, Rohan, Helm's Deep, Osgiliath and the Pelennor Fields, and the story is stitched to the films through clips narrated by Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The unlockable Evil Mode flips the perspective, letting you replay a region's battles as Sauron's forces against your own party.

That blend of film-era Middle-earth and classic JRPG structure is what makes The Third Age stand out on the original Xbox. It never tries to retell the trilogy scene for scene; it slots a new adventure into the gaps, and for players who wanted to linger in Jackson's version of Middle-earth with a party of their own, nothing else from the era scratches the same itch.

About the game

The Lord of the Rings:The Third Age introduces entirely new characters which aren't mentioned in the books or movies. The game does relate to the movies by including scenes from all three movies, with new background speech by Ian McKellen (Gandalf). There are seven playable characters in the game which have been created specifically for it, as well a small appearances by characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Eowyn, Faramir, and Gothmog. The game covers events in all three movies/books, mostly with references to major events shown through cut scenes, or the scenes from the movies with Ian McKellan's narration. A classic RPG game, The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age has gameplay elements similar to Final Fantasy, where you have a party of characters, each with a different set of skills and attributes, who gain levels, making them stronger as the game progresses. Battles are turn-based, and let the gamer make different decisions on what they want to do to change the outcome of the battle. The game travels through many areas throughout Tolkien's Middle Earth, including The Pelennor Fields and Moria.
