Item Description
Most Tolkien games put you in the boots of a hero. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum puts you inside the most divided mind in Middle-earth. Daedalic Entertainment's action-adventure is set in the years between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, as Gollum, consumed by the loss of his precious and desperate to find Bilbo Baggins, is dragged into the darkness of Mordor and, from there, toward the Elven halls of Mirkwood.
Gollum is no warrior, so this is a game of stealth and traversal. You climb, leap and scramble through the depths of Barad-dûr and the shadows of Cirith Ungol, slipping past Orcs rather than fighting them head-on. The signature idea is the split personality: at key moments Sméagol and Gollum argue, and you decide which voice wins the debate, steering how the story plays out.
It has to be said plainly: the game launched to some of the harshest reviews of 2023, with critics pointing to dated visuals, technical problems and repetitive design. Metacritic ranked it the worst-reviewed game of the year, and Daedalic publicly apologized to players. Not long after, the studio stepped away from developing games in-house, which makes Gollum its final self-developed release.
That history is part of its fascination now. For Tolkien completists, licensed-game historians and anyone curious to judge one of the era's most talked-about misfires firsthand, it is a singular piece of Middle-earth: a story told entirely from Gollum's point of view, with its own take on Mordor, Cirith Ungol and Thranduil's Mirkwood.
