Item Description

Most Lord of the Rings games throw you straight onto the battlefield. Aragorn's Quest starts somewhere gentler: in the Shire, years after the War of the Ring, where an older Samwise Gamgee is telling his children the story of the King, and he is not above embellishing a little. That storybook frame gives Headstrong Games' 2010 adventure a warmth and humor all its own, with Sean Astin returning as the voice of Sam, and the whole campaign plays out as the version of events a proud hobbit father would tell at bedtime.

Between chapters you play as Sam's son, Frodo Gamgee, training and running errands around the Shire before the tale picks up again with Aragorn himself. The main story spans eight chapters, carrying Strider through Rivendell, the depths of Moria, Fangorn Forest and the plains of Rohan to the walls of Helm's Deep, the Pelennor Fields and the Black Gate. His sword is always in hand, backed by a shield for barging through Orc lines, a flaming torch, a bow and a Rohirrim spear, and claiming Andúril powers up a strength gauge that unlocks special abilities. He also rides Brego into battle, scattering enemies on horseback across Rohan and the Pelennor.

A second player can drop in at any time as Gandalf, hurling fireballs alongside the future king, which makes it an easy game to share with a younger player or a less experienced partner. On PlayStation 3 it was among the early games to support PlayStation Move, turning a swing of the wand into a swing of Aragorn's sword (North American copies received Move support through an update), and it plays on a standard DualShock 3 as well. The camera sits behind Aragorn's shoulder, a closer and more cinematic view than the overhead camera of the PlayStation 2 version.

It is a lighter, more family-minded journey through Middle-earth than EA's film tie-ins, closer to a fireside story than a war epic, with the King difficulty there for players who want more bite. Finishing the story opens every chapter for replay, with fellowship tokens, upgrades and side quests to chase down. As a two-player trip through Tolkien's world that a parent and child can enjoy side by side, nothing else on the PS3 quite fills the same spot.

About the game

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest for the PS3 and Wii tells the story of Aragorn during the War of the Ring. Samwise Gamgee is narrating, and recalls the story to entertain his children who want to hear about the adventures of Aragorn. The game differs in several ways from the PS2 and handheld versions - the biggest being the behind view perspective, as opposed to the birds eye of the PS2 version, and the 'between the main story sections' gameplay in the Shire. The Wii version has different shading and lacks many voice acted lines for NPCs, as well as the intro sequence features different art for the story telling. The game also lets you attack by swinging with your Wii remote or the Move controller for Playstation 3. The game also supports local co-op where the second player controls Gandalf.
