Item Description

Juliet Starling's boyfriend spends most of Lollipop Chainsaw as a talking head dangling from her belt, and that tells you everything about the game's sense of humor. It's Juliet's 18th birthday, zombies have overrun San Romero High, and this cheerleader from a family of zombie hunters plans to fix it with a chainsaw, a pocketful of health-restoring lollipops and Nick's running commentary from her hip.

From Suda51's Grasshopper Manufacture, with filmmaker James Gunn co-writing the script, it plays like a candy-colored arcade brawler. Pom-pom strikes stun the undead, chainsaw swings finish them, and taking off three or more zombie heads in a single stroke triggers Sparkle Hunting, a shower of rainbows and bonus medals. Those medals buy new combos, upgrades and unlockables at the Chop2Shop.Zom store, and Nick himself becomes a weapon when Juliet plants his head on a headless zombie body for some very strange quick-time sequences.

The bosses are the Dark Purveyors, a gang of undead rock stars who each embody a different genre, from the punk Zed to the Viking metal of Vikke, and every fight is staged like a concert gone horribly wrong. Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka handled the music, Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence contributed tracks, and licensed songs such as Toni Basil's "Mickey" and The Chordettes' "Lollipop" are as tongue-in-cheek as everything else. Tara Strong voices Juliet with exactly the right mix of perky and deadly.

Reviews were mixed and the campaign is short, but Lollipop Chainsaw built a devoted cult following that eventually earned it a 2024 remaster, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. The Xbox 360 release is the original 2012 game as it first shipped, a slice of Grasshopper's wildest era that still feels like nothing else on the shelf. Grindhouse gore, cheerleader camp and a pop-punk attitude make it exactly the kind of strange, stylish game Suda51's fans seek out.
