Sackboy has always looked like something you want to reach out and touch, and on the PlayStation Vita you finally can. LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, developed by Double Eleven and Tarsier Studios for Sony in 2012, takes the knitted hero, the cardboard-and-felt worlds and the play, create, share spirit of Media Molecule's series and rebuilds them around the handheld's front touchscreen and rear touchpad.
The story follows the Puppeteer, Franklin, whose wooden puppets, the Hollows, have turned on their maker. Sackboy's rescue mission winds through La Marionetta, the Land of Odd, Jackpot City and Coaster Valley on the way to the Spooky Mansion, and every world is stuffed with stickers, prize bubbles and the series' trademark sense of homemade whimsy. Platforming is tight, the physics are as playful as ever, and co-op keeps the levels lively with friends.
What makes this version special is how naturally the touch controls fold into the design. Press on the rear panel and blocks push out of the background to become platforms; drag objects into place with a fingertip; draw shapes directly onto the screen to solve puzzles. Between the story levels sit touch-driven mini-games and head-to-head contests for two players sharing one screen, which show off just how much the Vita's hardware could do.
The creation suite is the other half of the appeal. New tools such as the Motion Recorder, Touch Sensor and Touch Tweaker let builders wire up their own touch-controlled contraptions, and the Memoriser stores data between levels and play sessions, which opened the door to full-blown games rather than one-off stages. Reviewers were won over: it scored in the high 80s on Metacritic, IGN named it its Vita Game of the Year for 2012 and called it the definitive LittleBigPlanet game. Sharing creations online was built into the original design, but the handcrafted campaign and the tools themselves are reason enough to keep Sackboy's handheld outing in a Vita library.
