Press a finger to the back of the Vita and a block pops out of the background toward you, ready for Sackboy to climb. That one trick sums up LittleBigPlanet on the Vita. Rather than shrinking the PS3 games, Double Eleven and Tarsier Studios, working with Sony's XDev Studio Europe, rebuilt Media Molecule's series around the handheld's front touchscreen and rear touchpad, and the result feels like it could not exist anywhere else.
The story pits Sackboy against the Hollows, wooden puppets the lonely Puppeteer built to replace the puppet friends he once cast aside. The adventure runs through La Marionetta, the Land of Odd, Jackpot City, Coaster Valley and the Spooky Mansion, with Stephen Fry narrating and a whimsical score by Winifred Phillips. Sackboy is as customizable as ever, and the handmade look of stitched fabric, cardboard and stickers translates beautifully to a screen you hold in your hands. Levels mix the series' floaty, physics-driven platforming with puzzles that have you poking, dragging and pushing the scenery into place, and a set of non-platforming mini-games puts the touchscreen center stage.
Create mode is where the Vita version really flexes. On top of the classic toolset it added the Memoriser for storing data between levels and play sessions, a Motion Recorder, and touch tools such as the Touch Sensor, Touch Tweaker and Layer Tool, which let creators build whole levels around tapping and swiping. Multi-touch even lets two players compete on one screen, or take turns with Pass'n'Play.
Critics loved it: an 88 on Metacritic, IGN's Vita Game of the Year for 2012 and TIGA's Game of the Year among its honors. The online servers that carried the community's shared levels went dark in 2021, but the cartridge still holds the complete story campaign and the whole creation toolkit, and few handheld games have ever handed players that much creative freedom.
