Item Description

Most NES heroes march into danger with a sword or a blaster. Nemo shows up in his pajamas with a pocketful of candy. Little Nemo: The Dream Master is Capcom's 1990 adaptation of the animated film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, itself drawn from Winsor McCay's celebrated early-1900s newspaper comic, and it captures the gentle strangeness of that source better than almost any licensed game of its day. Nemo's trip to Slumberland turns into a rescue mission when King Morpheus is carried off by the Nightmare King, and the road to him winds through one surreal dreamscape after another.

The candy is the clever part. Thrown at enemies it only stuns them, but tossed to the right animal it makes a friend, and Nemo can climb aboard and borrow its talents. A frog carries him to heights he could never reach on his own, a mole tunnels through the ground, and a gorilla brings the muscle Nemo so obviously lacks. Each dream is designed around those partners, so the fun lies in spotting which creature a stretch of level calls for and keeping it with you long enough to use it. Reaching the end of a stage is not enough, either: every level hides a set number of keys, and the exit door stays locked until Nemo has tracked them all down, which turns each world into a small exploration puzzle rather than a dash to the right edge of the screen.

This is Capcom at the peak of its NES craft, the same period that produced DuckTales and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and it shares their clean controls and bright, readable sprites. The mood is its own, though. Soft colors and a lilting soundtrack give the early dreams a sleepy, storybook feel, and the challenge creeps up on you; by the time Nemo pushes toward Nightmare Land, the platforming has turned demanding and the bedtime tone has curdled into something much darker.

It is a licensed game that never plays like a cash-in, built on an idea, animal companions with distinct powers that you win over with sweets, that gives it a personality nothing else in the NES platformer library quite matches. Anyone who has worked through Capcom's Disney lineup will recognize the same studio polish here, wrapped around a dreamier, odder world and a tougher adventure than its pastel looks let on.

About the game

Little Nemo: The Dream Master is a platform game that revolves around a young boy in his own surreal dreams as he journeys to Slumberland. Nemo can ride certain animals such as a frog, a gorilla, or a mole, by feeding them candy. Each animal has its own skills needed to complete each level. The purpose of the game is to travel to the Nightmare land to rescue Morpheus, the king of Slumberland, from the clutches of the evil Nightmare King. The game is based on the Japanese animated film, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, which itself is based on the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.
