Item Description
Some cards are so useful that Wizards keeps tucking them into preconstructed Commander decks, and Lightning Greaves is a prime example. The artifact costs two, equips for zero, and hands the equipped creature both haste and shroud, so a commander can enter, attack or use a tap ability right away, and no opponent can point a removal spell at it while the Greaves are attached.
Compared with its close cousin Swiftfoot Boots, which grants hexproof but costs one to equip, the Greaves trade a little flexibility for raw speed: shroud blocks your own targeted spells too, but re-equipping is free, so you can shift protection between creatures as often as the board demands. Voltron builds, token generals and value engines that need to survive a full turn cycle all lean on that free equip.
This is the Commander Anthology printing, collector number 220, a non-foil uncommon with Jeremy Jarvis's art. Commander Anthology collected four earlier Commander precons in one product, which makes this printing a nice snapshot of how often the Greaves have been part of the format's starter decks.
