Item Description
Lifeblood Hydra rewards you twice: once when it hits the battlefield as big as you can afford, and again when it leaves. For X plus three green mana it enters with X +1/+1 counters and tramples over blockers, and when it dies you gain life and draw cards equal to its power. A Hydra that comes down as an 8/8 either ends the game or refills your hand on the way out.
That death trigger is what makes it such a good fit in green Commander decks. Counter doublers like Hardened Scales and Doubling Season inflate it on entry, pump effects raise its power before you sacrifice it, and fling or sacrifice outlets let you cash it in on your own terms. Opponents face an awkward choice: let a trampling giant keep attacking, or kill it and hand you a pile of cards and life.
Its flavor text points back to Theros and the god Pharika: "Pharika has written her secrets on its bones so that only the worthy may discover them." This is the Commander Anthology printing, collector number 124, illustrated by Alex Horley-Orlandelli, in non-foil.
