Item Description

What would a Lethal Weapon game look like on the 8-bit Nintendo, years after the console's peak? Ocean Software's answer is a tough, no-frills action game that lets you play as either half of the movies' famous buddy-cop partnership.

Pick Riggs or Murtaugh and you head into side-scrolling streets crowded with criminals, fighting with fists, guns and grenades. The surprise, as veterans of the cartridge will tell you, is that your fists are often the better weapon: a well-timed punch tends to do more work than a bullet, which gives the game a scrappy, close-quarters feel that suits the films' brawling cops. Enemies come at you steadily, ledges and drops punish careless jumps, and pushing forward is a matter of learning where each thug appears and dealing with him before he deals with you.

The game was developed with Eurocom, the British studio that went on to a long career making licensed console games, and it was built separately from the Super Nintendo Lethal Weapon rather than as a straight port. It also has a secret weapon in its soundtrack: Neil Baldwin's music is the part of the game players praise most, and it pushes the NES sound chip well past what most licensed cartridges bothered with. The colorful graphics drew compliments too, a nice touch so late in the console's life.

It is famously hard and often frustrating, and it never pretended to be a lost classic. Its appeal is as a late-era NES curiosity, a 1993 licensed cartridge released when the Super Nintendo already ruled the shelves, and as a slice of early '90s movie merchandise for anyone collecting Mel Gibson and Danny Glover's partnership in every form it took.
