Before Rey ever sets foot on Jakku, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens drops you into the Battle of Endor, guiding Han, Luke and Leia through the climax of Return of the Jedi. It is a smart opening that bridges the original trilogy and the new one, and it leads into a playful retelling of the 2015 film packed with scenes the movie only hinted at.

The story follows Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and BB-8 against Kylo Ren, General Hux and Captain Phasma, from the desert junkyards of Jakku to the assault on Starkiller Base. Fully voiced cutscenes keep the film's energy, and bonus missions with new voice work from the cast expand on the story in the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, filling in corners the film skipped past.

TT Games tried more new ideas here than in most LEGO games. Multi-Builds let you assemble different structures from the same pile of bricks, and picking the right build, or switching between builds at the right moment, is often the key to a puzzle or a hidden collectible. Blaster Battles turn the action into cover-based shootouts against the First Order, a real change of pace for the series, and the flight sections put you at the controls of the Millennium Falcon and an X-wing in arena dogfights and Star Fox-style flying stages. Nintendo World Report called it the most polished LEGO game its reviewer had ever played, and the familiar slapstick is in top form.

The Wii U version arrived in 2016, in the console's final stretch, and plays as a full split-screen co-op adventure for two. It is one of the last big licensed releases on the system and a cheerful time capsule of the moment Star Wars came roaring back to theaters. For anyone building out the Wii U's LEGO library, this is the chapter where the series met a brand-new trilogy and found fresh ways to play.
