Item Description

Slide a Game Pak into the slot, flip the screen to Super Mario Land and the LEGO Game Boy suddenly feels like 1989 again. Set 72046 is a near life-size, 421-piece recreation of Nintendo's original handheld, standing just over 14 centimeters tall, and it captures the gray brick that put video games into millions of pockets with remarkable fidelity.

The details are what make it so satisfying to build. The +Control Pad, the A and B buttons, Select and Start, the contrast and volume dials and the cartridge slot are all modeled in brick, so the finished piece reads instantly as a Game Boy from across the room. The set's design includes two brick-built Game Paks, Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, each paired with a matching lenticular screen, plus a Nintendo start screen and a buildable display stand. Swapping a cartridge and its screen changes the scene on the display, a clever touch that rewards anyone who remembers powering up those two games for the first time. It is a model, not an electronic toy, so the magic is all in the craftsmanship.

The choice of games is a smart one. Super Mario Land launched alongside the Game Boy and gave Mario his first Game Boy adventure, while Link's Awakening brought a full Zelda quest to a monochrome screen in 1993 and is still remembered as one of the series' most charming entries. Together they bookend the early years of a handheld that rewrote what portable gaming could be.

For Nintendo collectors, this is the rare piece of LEGO that works as both a project and a centerpiece. Build it once and it sits proudly next to a real Game Boy, a snapshot of the moment LEGO and Nintendo turned the original handheld into bricks.
