Item Description

Doctor Doom has a plan, and naturally it involves something called the Doom Ray of Doom. In LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril, Doom and Loki recruit a who's who of supervillains to gather the Cosmic Bricks, shards of the Silver Surfer's shattered board, and build a weapon capable of conquering Earth. Nick Fury answers by assembling the heroes, which gives TT Fusion the perfect excuse to throw Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine and the Hulk at the problem with the LEGO series' trademark goofy charm.

This is not a straight shrink of the big console game. Universe in Peril was built for handhelds, with a fixed isometric camera and 45 compact levels spread across 15 chapters, each chapter headed by a different villain and usually capped by a single-screen boss fight. The tour takes in the streets of New York, the Baxter Building and Stark Tower, and while you control one hero at a time, a second can be called in for a quick backup attack.

The handheld design changes the rhythm of the LEGO formula in interesting ways. Lives are limited, so a tough stage carries real tension, and challenges graded at the end of each level award Gold Bricks that unlock later stages. Studs buy new heroes, Stan Lee turns up as a challenge target, and Free Play reopens finished levels to your whole roster. A few moments call on the Vita's touchscreen, and the Hulk even shrinks back into Bruce Banner when his health runs low.

Short levels make it a natural fit for quick sessions, and the voice cast and cutscenes give plenty of personality to a story that crams a full Marvel crossover into pocket size. It is its own distinct take on LEGO Marvel rather than a scaled-down copy, which makes it worth owning alongside the console original instead of in place of it.
