Few LEGO games feel as generous as this one. Traveller's Tales' 2013 Marvel adventure opens with the Silver Surfer's board shattering into Cosmic Bricks that scatter across Earth, and Doctor Doom and Loki racing to collect them for a superweapon with a gloriously silly name, the Doom Ray of Doom. Stopping them takes a roster that reads like a comic-shop wall: Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Wolverine, the Fantastic Four and well over a hundred more heroes and villains, with Galactus looming on the horizon.

What makes the roster fun rather than just big is how differently everyone plays. Spider-Man swings and clings to walls, Iron Man and Thor take to the air, Mister Fantastic stretches himself into the shape a puzzle needs, and oversized big-figure characters like the Hulk and the Thing smash through scenery the smaller heroes cannot touch. Switching between them to crack each puzzle is the heart of the LEGO formula, and Marvel's endless variety of powers gives Traveller's Tales more to play with than almost any other license.

Between story missions, the game opens up a compact open-world Manhattan, with the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier hovering above as a base of operations. The streets are packed with races, side activities and gold bricks to hunt down, and Stan Lee himself is a playable character who keeps landing in peril around the city, a running joke as charming as his movie cameos. Clark Gregg voices Agent Coulson, and the script is full of affectionate jabs at decades of Marvel lore.

On Wii U it plays as a full LEGO adventure with two-player split-screen co-op, which is how most people remember it: two friends trading quips as Hulk and Spidey. It draws on the comics as much as the films, which is why the X-Men and the Fantastic Four stand right beside the Avengers, a lineup the movies of that era could never put on screen together. It is a game you can sink weeks into, chasing every collectible across the city and rescuing Stan Lee one more time.
