Item Description

There is something irresistible about watching the Fellowship of the Ring rendered as little plastic minifigures while the films' own dialogue plays over the top. LEGO The Lord of the Rings borrows its voices straight from Peter Jackson's trilogy, so Gandalf, Aragorn and Gollum sound exactly the way fans remember, and the sweeping film score returns to give brick-built battles real grandeur. The contrast between solemn, sampled lines and LEGO slapstick is a big part of the joke, and it lands more often than not.

The handheld version, built by TT Fusion for Vita and 3DS, treats the trilogy as a brisk tour of Middle-earth. You move from story moment to story moment through The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, building LEGO structures to open new paths, firing arrows at targets to crack puzzles, carving through hordes of Orcs and doing some light platforming along the way. Stops along the route let you buy extras, and Free Play invites you back into finished chapters with any combination of characters to sniff out the secrets you missed.

Unlike the console release, this version skips the open-world Middle-earth between levels, which keeps the focus squarely on the story. Local co-op lets two Vita owners share the quest, and the forgiving LEGO approach to defeat, where a fall costs you studs rather than progress, makes it easy for younger players to stick with.

The Lord of the Rings has had grander adaptations, but few as cheerful. Seeing the Mines of Moria, Helm's Deep and the long climb up Mount Doom recast in bricks gives the trilogy a warmth all its own, and this is the way to carry that version of the journey in your pocket.

Based on The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy, LEGO The Lord of the Rings follows the original storylines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, taking players through the epic story events reimagined with the humor and endless variety of LEGO play. Trusted with the dangerous task to destroy an ancient magical ring that threatens all that is good, Frodo is forced to leave his peaceful home. But the ring wants to be found and the road to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed, will be perilous and riddled with Orcs and fouler things. To help Frodo, a Fellowship is formed —Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin.
