Indiana Jones hates snakes, and LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues still makes him wade through plenty of them. Traveller's Tales' 2009 follow-up does something its predecessor couldn't: it brings in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, giving Indy, Mutt Williams and the villainous Irina Spalko their LEGO treatment alongside fresh takes on the original three films.
Rather than replaying the first game's levels, the sequel builds new ones around Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, then gives Crystal Skull a story arc of its own. The whip is as useful as ever for swinging across gaps and yanking objects within reach, and the familiar LEGO rhythm of smashing scenery, building from the pieces and swapping between characters to solve puzzles carries the adventure. The humor stays light and slapstick, with the films' most famous moments played for gentle laughs, and the roster reaches well beyond Indy himself to Marion Ravenwood, Short Round, Henry Jones Sr. and a crowd of henchmen and allies to unlock.
The headline addition is a level creator that lets you build your own stages and play through them with friends, which gives the game life well beyond its story mode. Two-player drop-in, drop-out split-screen co-op means a second player can jump in at any moment, and the split screen moves with the action instead of pinning both players to one view.
Reviewers found it a looser, more experimental sequel than the first LEGO Indiana Jones, but it is the only LEGO game that covers all four Indy films, and the creator mode is a real reason to keep it in the rotation. For a family co-op night it is a cheerful way to chase artifacts on the Wii.
