Item Description

Every Batman story is really two stories, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame lets you play both. Traveller's Tales' 2008 adventure gives you a full hero campaign as Batman and Robin, rounding up a breakout of Arkham inmates, and then flips the board for a second campaign where you play the villains themselves, causing the very chaos the Dynamic Duo spent the first half cleaning up.

On the hero side, the fun is in the gadgets. Batman and Robin swap specialized suits to solve problems: gliding, demolition, magnetic boots and more, turning each level into a puzzle of which tool to bring and who should wear it. On the villain side, the Joker, the Penguin, Scarecrow and the rest of the rogues' gallery bring their own tricks and henchmen, and seeing the same city through the eyes of the people trying to wreck it is the twist that sets this game apart from the LEGO Star Wars and Indiana Jones games before it.

Gotham is rebuilt brick by brick, from Arkham Asylum to the docks and the museum, all with the slapstick pantomime humor of early LEGO games, where nobody speaks and every joke lands through expression and timing. That wordless comedy plays as well for adults as it does for kids, and drop-in local co-op on the couch is the best way to enjoy it. Vehicle stages break things up nicely, putting you behind the wheel of the Batmobile and at the helm of the Batboat as the chase moves across the city.

It was the first time Traveller's Tales built a LEGO game around an original story rather than retelling movies, and the hero-and-villain structure gave it a personality all its own. On the Wii it is an easy, cheerful pick for a family co-op night, and a fine place to start before LEGO Batman 2 gave the series a voice.
