Few games in the history of the medium carry the weight that The Legend of Zelda does. First released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and on the NES in North America in 1987, Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka's adventure introduced an entire generation to open-world exploration, hidden secrets and the thrill of wandering into a dungeon completely unprepared, in the best possible way. Hyrule felt vast for its time, rewarding curiosity at every turn and trusting players to figure things out for themselves. That sense of discovery is still electrifying to revisit today.

Link sets out across the overworld to find the eight dungeons hiding the scattered pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom, then storm Death Mountain to face Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda. Hidden caves, secret passages and a harder Second Quest for anyone who finishes the first kept players exploring for years, and the North American cartridge was one of the first games to save progress with an internal battery. The overworld theme, the fanfare of an acquired item, the punishing-yet-fair dungeons: all of it set the pattern for the adventure games that followed. It's a snapshot of Nintendo at its most inventive and ambitious.

The first North American release became famous for its gold cartridge, glimpsed through a window cut into the box, and Nintendo kept the game in circulation for years afterward, later reissuing it in its Classic Series line. It went on to sell more than six and a half million units worldwide, and in 2016 it was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, one of the most important games Nintendo ever made.

About the game

The Legend of Zelda is the first title in the Zelda series, it has marked the history of video games particularly for it's game mechanics and universe. The player controls Link and must make his way through the forests, graveyards, plains and deserts of the Otherworld to find the secret entrances to the eight dungeons and try to restore the broken Triforce. Among the game's mechanics, it was the first time we saw a continuous world that could be freely explored, power-ups that permanently enhanced the main character's abilities and a battery save feature that allowed players to keep their progress instead of having to start over. The gameplay balanced action sequences with discovery, secrets and exploration.
