Cold Steel II opens with Rean Schwarzer waking alone in the snowbound Eisengard mountains, a month after the shocking final hours of the first game left Class VII scattered and the Erebonian Empire tearing itself apart. His only company is Celine, a talking black cat, and Valimar, the towering Ashen Knight he awakened beneath Thors Military Academy. From that lonely start, Falcom builds one of the most gripping middle chapters in any JRPG series.
The academic calendar that structured the first game is gone. With the Noble Alliance and the Reformist government at open war, Rean sets out across Erebonia to find his missing classmates one by one, beginning near his hometown of Ymir with help from the bracer Toval Randonneur. Each reunion lands with real emotional force because the first game spent so long building these friendships, and a cleared Cold Steel save carries over, so choices and relationships you formed there change how certain events and conversations play out.
Combat keeps the original's turn-based, position-aware battles and the ARCUS links that pair allies together, then adds Overdrive, which lets linked partners unleash a burst of consecutive turns at the right moment. The bigger change is scale. Rean can call on Valimar for mech battles against rival Divine Knights and armored war machines, so the civil war is something you fight at full size, and Falcom Sound Team jdk's score gives those clashes and the big story turns plenty of lift.
Cold Steel II is the second half of the story Trails of Cold Steel began, answering the cliffhanger that game ended on and setting the stage for the rest of the Erebonia arc in Cold Steel III and IV. Those later chapters never came to the Vita, so this is where the Cold Steel story ends on Sony's handheld: a long, conversation-rich RPG with dozens of hours of content, and exactly the kind of game the Vita's pick-up-and-play design suits best.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II is the seventh installment in the main Trails series, serving as a direct sequel to the events of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel. The game follows Rean Schwarzer to his hometown of Ymir with the assistance of bracer Toval Randonneur, but quickly finds himself and his loved ones caught in the crossfire of the war. Game progression is no longer tied to the school schedule structure of the original, with the game now centered around traveling the world rather than attending classes. If the player has a completed game save file from the prior game, it has an effect in Cold Steel II, with certain events and dialogues playing out differently based on choices and relationships built in the first game.
