Item Description

Estelle Bright is the kind of RPG hero who swings a quarterstaff first and asks questions second, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is where she, and an entire saga, begins. She and her adopted brother Joshua, the quiet, sharp-eyed boy their father Cassius brought home years earlier, set out across the Kingdom of Liberl as trainee bracers, the peacekeepers who take on everything from monster hunts to missing-persons cases. When Cassius vanishes along with the airship he was traveling on, their training journey turns into something much bigger.

Liberl is the real star. Nihon Falcom built a small kingdom wedged between two great powers, humming with orbal technology, and every region you visit has its own politics and personality: rural Rolent, the market city of Bose, coastal Ruan, the engineering hub of Zeiss and finally the capital, Grancel. Even minor townspeople have names, routines and storylines that change as the chapters advance, and companions such as the whip-cracking Scherazard, the flamboyant bard Olivier and the gentle academy student Kloe each bring their own secrets into the party.

Combat is turn-based on a grid, but the AT bar makes it tactical. A timeline shows who acts next, along with bonuses tied to certain turns, so the trick is to steal the healing or critical-hit turns from your enemies with well-timed Crafts or a game-changing S-Craft. Orbments slotted with quartz decide which elemental Arts each character can cast, letting you shape your party much as you like.

Trails in the Sky began on Japanese PCs in 2004, and this PSP edition from XSEED Games was the first time English-speaking players could follow Estelle and Joshua's story, an enormous translation effort that opened the door for everything that followed. Cold Steel, Zero, Azure and the later games all trace their threads back to Liberl, and its ending is still talked about for how sharply it reframes everything that came before.

About the game

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first installment in the main Trails series, serving as the beginning to the Liberl arc and the series as a whole. Nihon Falcom comes a series of RPGs telling a legend of adventure, political intrigue, and mystery, with a tale of growing up at the core. With a mix of turn-based and strategy combat, battles will cause unique builds and plans to handle many different situations and allow for different play styles. Wonderfully detailed characters abound, even to the smallest NPC, and the player will find themself taking the world in at every turn.
