Strip the license off Fist of the North Star and what is left? Last Battle, a Sega-developed brawler from the Genesis's earliest days in North America, answers that question. In Japan it was a full Hokuto no Ken adaptation. For its 1989 American release the license was dropped, Kenshiro became Aarzak, and his companions Lin and Bat became Alyssa and Max, but the post-apocalyptic martial-arts DNA is still visible in every punch.
Aarzak fights with six basic attacks across standing, crouching and jumping positions, and every defeated enemy feeds a power meter. Fill it far enough and he transforms into a super-powered state for the rest of the stage, unleashing rapid-fire punches and kicks. The structure is more ambitious than a straight beat 'em up. The game is split into four chapters, and after each level a map shows where you are and which paths branch ahead. Most stages scroll sideways, others are trap-filled mazes where finding the right route matters more than fighting, and one-on-one boss duels punctuate the journey. Even the timer is unusual: running out of time does not end your run, it slowly drains your life until you reach the exit.
The western version also changed how enemies go down. In the Japanese original, foes met the gruesome fate that fans of the manga would expect; here they simply fly off the screen when struck, and many of the bloodier boss finishes were removed. Reviews have always been split, and some critics have been downright harsh, but that only adds to its curiosity value. The art team included Naoto Ohshima, who would go on to design Sonic the Hedgehog.
Put together, that makes Last Battle a fascinating artifact of the Genesis's first year: a disguised anime adaptation, a brawler with an unusually branching structure, and an early credit for an artist who helped define Sega's next decade.
Last Battle: Legend of the Final Hero is a side-scrolling action game similarly to its predecessor Black Belt. The player takes control of Aarzak (Kenshiro in the Japanese original), who fights against his enemies using his punches and kicks. Aarzak can attack while standing, jumping, and crouching, for a total of six basic attacks. In addition to his life gauge, Aarzak has a power-up meter that will gradually fill as he defeats enemies. When the meter reaches a certain point (depending on the stage), Aarzak will transform into a super-powered state, allowing him to perform rapid punches and kicks for the rest of the stage. The game's levels (with the exception of boss battles and maze stages) feature a time limit at the lower-right corner of the screen; but unlike other time limits, instead of killing the character immediately when it reaches, it will instead gradually drain the player's life gauge until the player completes the level. The game is divided into four stages or chapters, each featuring several levels. After completing a level the player will be shown a map which displays the player's current location and the paths they can take.
